Expired Coke

Ooops. Turns out I have some just expired Coke.

Question:Will you drink expired coke as a dare or challenge?

For your info, I just happily chug down one can. Knowing that the least could go wrong....

Why?

1. Thanks to my food tech degree, I know that in airtight can or bottle with no oxygen, no aerobic bacteria is going to be present.

2. My concerns will only be the anaerobes to kill me. Sadly a coke with a pH of 2-4, no microbes, even the legendary Clostridium Botulinum will stand a chance of assassinating me.

3. There is no expiry for Coke. There is however a best before sign. Yes. Best before. your coke MIGHT be flat but it doesn't mean that it is unsafe for consumption.

I once heard in horror that some people play the mentos + coke experiment on a 1.5L coke which was pass best before...

A one way trip into my stomach and out through my urinary tract would have been a better ending....

*the writer will not bear for any mishaps (IF ANY) should anything goes wrong. The writer is well versed in food science knowledge and has hence took all possibilities into account before attempting this feat. Do try this at home but at your own risk (and wisdom).

Pen Size 3D Printer

Innovation. Take an existing technology. Repackage it into a brand new thing. Sell the idea. Wham big win.

It makes sense: Create a small size 3D printer that prints or draw 3D stuffs. And what more than to have the ink using highly rigid plastic?

The Diet Coke + Mentos Explosion

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7f/Diet_Coke_Mentos.jpg
Yet another Diet Coke + Mentos related post appeared on my lives feed. This time, it got me thinking. Why does it happen?

Well apparently Mythbusters had it all wrapped up. Apologize for the low resolution but that is the best on Youtube I can find.

Car Catergorization

Forgot if I have mentioned this before or not. I'm kinda into cars lately.

Sometimes it is good for a guy to be able to appreciate the beauty and the aesthetics of a car in the absence of a female (LOL!).

Depends on the level of appreciation and interests, cars can be studied to a very deep and technical extend.

Well today let's just make things easier. I'm also learning so hey I've decided to look up the different categories we can divide the cars into.

Usually we always categorize cars by their brands and manufacturers. Which is kinda kindergarten stuff since its almost the same as classifying humans against their race and skin color. So I've looked up on some basic classifications that could come in handy.

And dear how wrong I was when it comes to classifications! There are so many ways that you can group and classify them.

You have specs defined by vernacular and everyday term usage. You have groupings defined by the law and regulation. So yeah it depends. It's too complicated to summarize everything in this one humble post of mine.

But let's start with some basics I've learnt ok?

File:Three body styles with pillars and boxes.png
From top to bottom: Sedan, Station Wagon, Hatchback

1. Sedan - The most common cars we see are sedans. 3 well defined areas i.e: the front, body and back
Examples of cars available in Malaysia: Toyota Vios, Proton Saga, Volkswagen Polo Sedan, Honda City

2. Station Wagon - Something similar to the hatchback but a very long but not well defined end

Examples of cars available in Malaysia: I don't think we have a good example of this over here. Please be noted that SUVs and four wheel drives are omitted from this category.

2. Hatchback - Cars with a two box configuration (just green and red). Basically a car without a well defined boot space like the top picture.

Examples of cars available in Malaysia: MyVi, Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo.

So yeah here is a starter for cars 101. I'm into a deeper study so yeah I'll just stop here. VROOM!

p.s. Ever wanted to know the name of the three wheel light blue car that always gets gotcha by Mr Bean? It's called the Reliant Regal.

The Leidenfrost Effect

I once heated up my pan for too long while cooking.

I added in my butter and the pan smoked and the butter went brown instantly.

Panic, I switched off the stove and pour in water...

I saw a phenomenon which I never seen before. Nor did I bothered to learn up this peculiar incident as it did slipped off my mind after that.

Until today when 9GAG posted this... I gain a new science knowledge.

How funny it is to bump into a science phenomenon when you aren't still aware of the truth and explanation behind it...

Coelacanth - The Fish That Time Forgot

Again the Internet has brought me to places I've never imagined I'd travel.

Why is the finding of the coelacanth (pronounced SEE-LA-KANTH) so mind numbing that it sent the world crazy?

Yes it is an age old fish. A living fossil, which supposed to went extinct together with the dinosaurs millions of years ago.

What made it so famed, that it has been touted as the missing piece of of evolution. The intermediate form of evolution from reptiles to mammals (seen from the perspective of Darwin's Law of Evolution.)

Looking at the picture, one can't be amazed of the amount of limbed fins this fish has. 5 of them at the bottom part of the body. That could be the missing puzzle piece we've been looking for.

Signals from Djibouti

Sorry for the lengthy one week absence dear daily learners.

So this came to me in an email, courtesy of National Geographic. I'd say although I subscribe them yet I don't really go through every subscription. In fact it was totally random for me to open up this one.

Now as we are aware that the advancement of globalization and technology has really narrowed down the borders and distance (figuratively) between each and everyone of us. Put simply, with the ever evolving and increasing apps and widespread coverage of the Internet, losing in touch is something we are getting out of touch. Even the ever happening and on spot updates can be delivered via #hashtag at almost every available platforms out there.

But not all of us are in sync with the latest advancement. There are those of us who lag behind.

So here's a story and a shot, that took the top prize for 2013.

The Chaos Pendulum of St Mary Redcliffe

I almost forgot to share this.. This deserves a post on its own, although I have plenty to blog about today!

There I was, basking in the inner beauty of St. Mary Redcliffe Cathedral, appreciating the soothing silence that calms me.

Then I heard water tricking. The sound of metal colliding. What on earth is wrecking the peaceful serenity of the church?

A weird looking compass swaying and moving. Then I realized I've stumbled upon the one and only Chaotic Pendulum (this specific model and build up).

Here is an explanation offered: click here

I stood there for 10 minutes with my brother. We had numerous deduction: the flow of the water isn't really constant. But then again, it is indeed a good replication of the Double Pendulum, where the chaotic movements of the swings cannot be predicted!!

Alright enough of the physics lecture. Here are some freebies of St Mary Redcliffe before I post them up on Facebook when I have the time. Enjoy!

Okay just one more last photo of the pendulum kay?

There you go guys. Easily one of the most enjoyable place I've been in Bristol. :)

Ants That Move like Solid and Liquid

Ants. Solid. Liquid. They don't seem to have a correlation at all for me until this morning.

It seems that fire ants in a small colony or group can exhibit a very jaw dropping effect: they can behave as a solid or as a liquid.

Cooking 101

Recently I have this kick or knack to watch Gordon Ramsay through youtube.

And it slowly got to Jamie Oliver too.

One thing that I can never deny is - I love eating.

And it's hard to not want to learn to cook and just be an eater.

Good thing I studied Food Tech. It makes me more attentive to the different kinds of cooking methods available.

Top that up with some basic science knowledge, I think my basic is good.

Here are a list of the many different cooking methods. It may not encompasses everything, but it's good enough to help differentiate the one's that we thought were synonymous.

Circuit Scribe

Imagine a world without wire. Imagine wireless-less.

Yet, you can still connect things. A battery to a bulb. A generator to a machine. Without wires. Without wireless.

HOW?

Watch the video. And get AMAZED!

Long Term Memory

Why is it we tend to forget what we ate for lunch 2 weeks ago, yet not forget if we haven't swim for 2 weeks?

Find out more here

Because memories are governed by emotions and that "special-moment-of-your-life" kick.

Once it is generated, it stays on forever.

Yoghurt Technology

Today I've learned yoghurt technology from a very very senior manager at work!

Contrary to other products, one big difference that sets yoghurt from the rest is - it contains millions and millions of bacteria inside it. It's a LIVE product!

On paper it is easy to make yoghurt. Make the milk curd! But there is so much science behind the secret of a great yoghurt. From the raw material itself - the casein and whey protein, till the bacteria strains used for inoculation (lactobacillus bulgaricus & streptococcus thermophillus) and the processing parameters.

What are the difference of set yoghurt, stir yoghurt, and yoghurt drink?

Food science actually makes a lot of sense. Just think of mastering all the basics, obey the law of science, understand it and apply it to your advantage.

You shall be the king of all foods.
